5. Caudry – Village cemetery
Daily pressure on Caudry population during German Occupation
As many as 20,000 German soldiers were stationed in Caudry during the First World War, on a local population of 12,000. The everyday pressure on the latter was very great. Among other visible reminders of the war are the cemeteries. The Commonwealth military section in the old village cemetery contains graves whose headstones, lying flat almost at ground level, are arranged in an unusual formation.
