Civil victim of German atrocities: Priest Saint Aubert

Thrust into the centre of the fighting from late morning on 26th August 1914, the village of Haucourt was the scene of one of the earliest acts of violence committed by the future occupying forces against the civilian population. While celebrating mass in the church, Toussaint Saint-Aubert, the village priest, was joined by a number of wounded British soldiers. While assisting them, he was surprised by some German troops, who killed him with blows of their rifle butts and boots.
