12. Noyelles-sur-Escaut
Major German logistics base during WW1, Noyelles sur Escaut kept some pillboxes which have been recently restored.
Situated on the Saint-Quentin canal, Noyelles-sur-Escaut was a major logistics base on the Hindenburg Line, as is evidenced by the 14 pillboxes that still remain. They were used for storing the munitions unloaded from boats on the canal before being moved to the front line.
Whilst the village’s bridges were among the objectives for the British plan of attack during the offensive, the village fell into German hands again at the end of the battle.
