17. Bonavis

Liberated at the beginning of the Battle of Cambrai, Bonavis was taken again by the Germans during their counter-offensive.

The highest point on the Hindenburg Line, the area around Bonavis was a focal point of numerous defensive positions: the surrounding farmhouses bristled with machine-guns and blockhouses can still be seen in the neighbouring fields. On the morning of 20th November 1917, the Germans watched stupefied as hundreds of tanks advanced towards them. The position was taken but, after terrible fighting, fell into German hands again during the 30th November counter-offensive.
