22. Villers-Plouich
Close to the Hindenburg Line, the village was involved in the Battle of Cambrai.
Villers-Plouich, taken by the British in April 1917, was in the immediate vicinity of the
Hindenburg Line and stood at the heart of the tanks’ advance on Marcoing. The Red Baron Manfred von Richthofen was involved in the aerial fighting. During the action, Captain Richard Leslie Wain earned his posthumous Victoria Cross. He was the only member of a tank crew to receive the highest British decoration.
