25. Flesquières

Fierce fighting in Flesquières village during the Battle of Cambrai.

On 20th November 1917, Flesquières acted as a check to the advance of the British tanks. They were decimated by artillery fire while attempting to cross over the trenches. The Scottish troops struggled to get through the barbed wire in face of machine-gun fire. It was only on the next day that they managed to take the village, which remained in British hands until the German offensive in 1918. The Monument des Nations on the edge of the village is a reminder of the fighting there.
