When Canadian troops liberated Cambrai, they found a city on fire...

When the Canadian liberators entered Cambrai on 9th October 1918, the town centre was ablaze. As they left, the Germans decided on a scorched-earth policy. They burned down the town hall, causing the loss for all time of thousands of archive documents. The town had been empty of its inhabitants ever since the evacuation of 5th September, during which more than 2700 perished.
