On the evening of the 25th August 1914, the first skirmishes took place between advance troops of the 1st German Army and soldiers of the 2nd South Lancashires and 1st Wiltshires. After a day of carnage on the 26th came the beginning of the implacably organised occupation. It was only after long years that liberation came, following renewed fighting in October 1918.
