It is in one of the largest cemeteries in the Cambrai area, with 832 Commonwealth graves, that there are to be found, buried a few metres apart, two soldiers who suffered very different fates. One of them was awarded the Victoria Cross, while the other was shot for attempted desertion. Two lives with tragic endings, but brought closer to one another after the 2006 pardon granted by the British Crown.
