36. Vertigneul
New Zealand troops had a decisive action at Vertigneul in October 1918.
It was around the 23rd October 1918 that very heavy fighting took place around the hamlet of Vertigneul. The Germans, organised in strongly held defensive positions, were only dislodged by the decisive actions of New Zealand troops acting on their own for the first time in the war. The taking of Le Quesnoy, a little later, is still today seen as one of their greatest military achievements.
