Cambrai is a real piece of "Swiss cheese". This medieval city has the fourth national underground network with three hundred and twenty five kilometers of galleries, built at different times.
The souterrains of the citadel
The countermine galleries of one of the last imperial citadels built by Charles 5th are worth visiting.
They used to ensure the surveillance of the ditch of the 16th century fortifications and are a real underground maze.
The defence system which was used till the 19th century is very original.
